Cor Walda (Zwolle-NL) : élever des champions, obtenir des performances de haut niveau et continuer à croire en la qualité

18 Oct 2026

Over the past few seasons, Cor Walda has proven that his pigeon colony belongs to the absolute elite. Even during a particularly difficult personal period, he continued to deliver strong results. It was already clear in 2024 that Cor Walda possessed an exceptionally strong loft; with national ace pigeon titles, regional championships, and top rankings in various competitions, he demonstrated that his pigeons could excel across multiple disciplines. In 2025, he raised the bar even higher, consistently producing strong series of results and impressive rankings week after week. He distinguished himself with both old and young birds, while several individual standouts also made a name for themselves on the international stage. In 2026, a new challenge arose: the formation of "Section East" (Afdeling Oost), which merged the former Sections 8 and 9—along with a portion of Section 7—into a larger administrative division. It remained to be seen how his pigeons would fare under these new conditions, but the season provided the answer. Cor secured a significant number of championships, most notably taking first place as the "Interprovincial Best Fancier – One-Day Long Distance (Nominated)" and winning the title of "Interprovincial Ace Pigeon – One-Day Long Distance." Yet, these sporting achievements masked a deeply difficult time; during the racing season, Cor lost his wife—a profound personal loss that cast a heavy shadow over the season.

The champions that make the difference

A strong loft is defined not only by overall championship titles but also by the individual pigeons that truly stand out. In recent years, Cor Walda has had several such exceptional birds. Three names stand out in particular: "Olympic Super Girl," "Olympic Hakon," and "Jane."

"Olympic Super Girl" developed into an absolute top performer in the one-day long-distance races. At the 2026 Olympiad in Dortmund, she was crowned the world’s 1st Olympiad Pigeon in the one-day long-distance category. She further demonstrated her class in the national "De Allerbeste" (The Very Best) competition, securing first place in the one-day long-distance category for the 2024–2025 period. And that was not all; she also achieved a high ranking in the Old Birds category of the same national competition, finishing in fifth place.

"Olympic Hakon" also made his mark internationally. At the 2026 Olympiad in Dortmund, he secured 2nd place as a Dutch Olympiad pigeon in the Middle Distance category. Furthermore, in the "De Allerbeste" national competition for 2024–2025, he finished second in the Middle Distance category. A son of "Olympic Hakon" x "Olympic Super Girl" took 1st place this season from Hirson (320 km) against 6,509 pigeons. A son of "Olympic Hakon" x "Roxy" (15th National Ace Pigeon Old Birds in the "De Allerbeste" competition) can be found as Lot 1 in Cor’s online auction, which is currently underway on this website. "Roxy" is the nest-mate sister of "Olympic Super Girl."

In addition, there is also "Jane": 1st National Ace Pigeon Allround ("De Allerbeste" competition) – 1st Provincial Ace Pigeon General Speed – 1st Provincial Ace Pigeon Middle Distance – 4th National Ace Pigeon Middle Distance (PIPA) – 4th National Ace Pigeon Sprint/Middle Distance (PIPA).

A son of "Jane" can be found under lot 2 in this auction.

These performances are not mere one-off outliers. They are the product of a loft where multiple pigeons consistently prove their quality at a high level—a depth of talent that is further reflected in the championship titles won by the colony.

An impressive track record spanning three seasons

The results achieved by Cor Walda are best evaluated over the course of several years. He laid a solid foundation in 2024, followed by an exceptionally strong season in 2025, and in 2026, he reaffirmed his high standard of performance within the newly formed 'Oost' (East) division.

These results clearly demonstrated that Cor’s success did not rely on a single exceptional pigeon or a solitary discipline. His colony possessed the quality to compete successfully on multiple fronts.

The OLR Rimini 2026: two victories with a single pigeon

Cor Walda also made a name for himself outside of the regular competition circuit. At the OLR Rimini, the pigeon NL25-1575705 delivered an exceptionally strong performance by winning two separate races. His first victory came in the ‘Super Derby’ on May 17, 2026—a 624-kilometer race from Lecce—where he emerged as the winner against 281 other pigeons. He finished with a lead of no less than 25 minutes, clocking a speed of 1,148.33 meters per minute. A few weeks earlier, on April 9, 2026, the same pigeon had already distinguished himself in the ‘Hot Spot 3’ race from Porto San Giorgio (150 km), leaving a field of 2,467 pigeons behind him. His pedigree is also particularly noteworthy: his grandfather, ‘Ragnar,’ is likewise the grandfather of ‘Olympic Super Girl.’ This serves as a fine example of how proven quality within a bloodline can manifest across different individual pigeons and various types of competition.

A racing team kept intentionally small

The foundation of Cor’s success does not lie in a particularly large number of racing pigeons, but rather in a manageable team where quality is the primary focus. He keeps approximately twenty cocks and twenty hens, which are raced using the "total widowhood" system. If a pigeon proves to be an exceptional performer, its partner is kept home after a few races, allowing full attention to be directed toward that specific bird’s performance. Toward the end of the season, Cor sometimes switches to a "nest" system (racing pigeons on eggs or with young). He maintains a separate loft for his young birds; he breeds about fifty each year, which are raced as a group without the use of a nest system. Here, too, he opts for a simple, consistent approach. The young birds are provided with artificial light from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, spending the remaining hours in complete darkness. An automated system manages this process, sparing Cor from having to be present at specific times. He explains his choice: "I have five grandchildren, and I enjoy taking them on outings. It wasn't always easy to get home on time to handle the darkening process—it was stressful. That’s why I fully adapted my loft with a timer. It makes the hobby manageable and effective for me." It is a practical solution that fits his lifestyle well; Cor wants to provide the best possible care for his pigeons while still leaving time for his family and grandchildren. With his older pigeons, he competes in races ranging from 100 to 725 kilometers, while the young birds are raced from their own dedicated loft. This clear structure allows him to provide targeted guidance to his racing teams. Eleven breeding pairs as a foundation for the future. In addition to his racing team, Cor maintains eleven carefully selected breeding pairs. Breeding is a crucial part of his strategy, as the performance seen in the racing loft must be passed on to future generations. To achieve this, he pairs his best former racers with pigeons acquired from proven, top-tier bloodlines—often birds descending from major race winners or "TT" (top-tier/ace) pigeons. The selection process is rigorous; only pigeons with multiple high-performing ancestors in their pedigree are considered. Cor places a strong emphasis on the quality of the bloodline and the track record already established within it. Through targeted crossbreeding and deliberate inbreeding, he aims to combine desired traits and maintain a high standard of quality across his entire colony. The successes of "Olympic Super Girl," "Olympic Hakon," and "Jane" serve to validate this approach.

Nutrition and medical care: a consistent system

Cor also keeps the daily care of his pigeons straightforward and organized. He relies on trusted feed mixtures and a fixed medical regimen. For nutrition, he sources his feed from the wholesaler De Groot in ’s-Heerenbroek, primarily using Havens B-18 and Versele-Laga Start Plus. Furthermore, he has relied on supplements from Beute for many years, which remain an integral part of his overall care system. In terms of medical care, too, he adheres to a clear routine. Regarding the old pigeons, Cor explains: “The old pigeons are vaccinated against paratyphoid in November and against paramyxovirus in December. During the incubation period, I administer a seven-day course of treatment for canker. At the end of March, they receive another paratyphoid vaccination. In addition, every Tuesday, I apply ‘canker drops’ into their nostrils—that should be sufficient.” The young pigeons receive a similar regimen. They are vaccinated twice against paramyxovirus-rotavirus and also receive a pox vaccination, a course of treatment for canker, and a paratyphoid vaccination. “For them, I add the canker drops to their feed,” he adds.
