That is how I would like to describe Dieter's colony. After all, living in the East of the country, Amblève, (Amel) ... One of the 9 municipalities of German-speaking Belgium belonging to the province of Liège, adjacent to the Luxembourg and Germany. A place where racing pigeons is very difficult, let alone winning. There are multiple obstacles: the mountainous region, the hilly plateau slowing down the pigeon to name but a few. It is definitely more difficult and there usually is head wind and mass at the pigeons disadvantage. This calls for pigeons that stand out from the crowd and choose their way home independently. Go-getters.
Hence Dieter Ballmann has created his own kind. Through years of selection and the willpower of the fancier as well as the art of breeding, he has managed to build a group of "go-getters". Pigeons with character who love a bit more of a challenge, enjoy spending hours in the air and have the willpower to keep going when most pigeons stop!

A good learning school at a young age

The youngsters are trained with the pigeons of the province of Luxembourg. This is the line of the Route du Rhône - we can compare these flights with the "mountain stages from the tour of France" - they should be capable. Those who remain become yearlings after which the preference goes to the races from 500 to 600 km. They are played in ful celibacy (no hens). As 2-year-olds, they are further trained to turn into true "marathon flyers", ideally on flights such as Cahors, Agen. Of course, with the predilection for taking part in the Internationals (Marseille-Barcelona-Perpignan) later. This requires work, insight and patience of the fancier.
