Nick & Roger Thijs from Hallaar became 1st National Champion Heavy middle distance youngsters KBDB 2021

The colony that went like a comet to the national top in the heavy middle distance in 2017-2018 has confirmed their qualities in recent seasons. Nick, Roger and wife Godelieve are a golden trio in the field of pigeon sport and in 2021 had one of their best seasons ever with a national victory and becoming national champion. Both the old, yearlings and youngsters did fantastic and the train seems to have left in 2022 as well. They are definitely ready to explode…
Elsewhere, too, their pigeons are doing fantastically, so these Thijs pigeons are increasingly sought after by other lofts to raise their level.

Hens and cocks on classic widowhood
The system has been standing here for several years and not much has been changed. The old racing pigeons do winter breeding while the yearlings get some rest to get through the moult completely. Afterwards they meet for a second time around mid-March for 3 to 4 days to get the hang of the system.The hens are darkened from March 1 to the end of April, while this is not the case with the cocks.
In terms of training, the cocks fly twice a day, this is 20 to 30 minutes at a time and the hens fly once a day. But these train better than other years and the line of the good team of youngsters is continued here as yearlings.
During the day the hens are kept in a small aviary where they normally always stay, only when it is warm they have the choice between the loft and the aviary because it can also get too hot in there.In terms of motivation it is very simple, the widowers are taken in in this way while the hens are allowed to fly for 5 minutes in their breeding box before they are packed. Simple, easy and it works for us. After returning home, they can stay together for a few hours, from the national races this is always until the evening or after a few tough flights until the next morning.
The 2021 young pigeon team was at a super high level.
Indeed, we bred about 110 youngsters, some of which were lost in preparation for the first flights. Once they are up and running, we experience few losses here and they did really fantastic.
The youngsters were darkened from the beginning of March to June 15th and from the beginning of July we lightened them until the end of the season (6am – 11pm). We had few couples between our youngsters and there was no question of extra motivation. That's why they were usually basketed like this without doing anything.
In between the national races we choose either Noyon or middle distance. That decision always falls the week itself, how tough the flight has been and what is yet to come. But when they are in motion, they have to come every week.

Nutrition
We have been using Aidi's mixtures since 2021. For example, on Sunday and Monday the pigeons receive Vliegmix 1, Tuesday and Wednesday morning Vliegmix 2 and from Wednesday evening until basketing Vliegmix 3. With the hens we use Girl Power from the middle distance races at the beginning of the week. The schedules they draw up themselves are followed here. As extras we do give peeled sunflower seeds after basketing
For the medical story we always consult Dr.Mariën and we use his condition powder weekly and his condition syrup 1x a month. When we return home we always give Belgasol from Belgica De Weerd and when basketing Dextrotonic from Versele – Laga. Until now, the pigeons had nothing to control and nothing was given at this time.
