1. Foreword:
André (70) has been infected with the pigeon germ since he was 10 years old. Through his uncle Theofiel Wuytack and afterwards via his grandfather Arthur Ost he got to know pigeon sport. After his marriage in 1972 he started to raise independent on the short distance, and then he moved in 1979 to his current address. From 2000 he entered the middle distance races. With a lot of success as André became champion more than once. His strains during those days came from Karel Hufkens and Johan Van Damme.
In 2013 and 2014 he invested in pigeons for the greater middle distance. He bought in 2 years of time 28 pigeons via internet auctions with amongst other 5 granddaughters from 'New Freddy' and pigeons from David Vermassen, Vermeerbergen-Wilms, Dirk Deroose . He also had a lot of success with pigeons from Jos Vercammen, Sylvain Verhestraeten (“Chanel nr. 1”), Andreas Drapa en Heremans-Van Dijck (“Di Caprio” x “Dolce Vita”).
More recently reinforcement came from Joel Verschoot, Philippe Dobbelaere, Kurt & Raf Platteeuw, Bart & Nance Van Oeckel, Gaston Van De Wouwer, Luc De Laere and Vlaeminck Mark. All these youngsters will be tested the coming season.
As you can read it : the past few years he invested a lot but it has shown its use already. As from 2016 he raced with success with hens on widowhood.
André raced for the first time this year on the long distance races which has worked out nicely as well.
2. Game system:
The breeding team (45 couples) are being coupled beginning of December. The first eggs are being removed immediately to the lesser widow cocks, so he has 4 early youngster from the breeders. A round is for vouchers and as a reserve for the breeding loft to keep the breeding loft young.
The widow cocks are divided over 2 lofts One loft of 30 pigeons to race the middle distance (10 pigeons) and greater middle distance (20 pigeons). The other loft (4 old and 4 yearling) are for the Quièvrain races (short distance). The 25 hens are all being raced on the greater middle distance. He doesn't breed out of the racing hens....as these are always in the aviary in front of the lofts. Only when the weather is really bad they can go inside. During the season the hens can see their partner for about 10 minutes before basketing and after the race, depending on the heaviness of the race, it can be until the day after.
André keeps in total 100 youngsters for the middle and greater middle distance. These are being raced on the sliding doors system. There is also a loft for the Quièvrain races (30 youngsters). All youngsters are being darkened, during this period it is dark on the loft from 16h30 in the afternoon until 8 o'clock in the morning.
At the beginning of the year, when it is too cold to train the pigeons only go out in the afternoon. When the temperatures rises above 15°C they also train in the morning as from 8 o'clock. The hens don't train very long averages, but André let them train together with the young hens from the moment they are separated.
During the Winter period the cocks, just as the hens, train on a regular base, so their base condition stays also in Winter.
Both the old as yearling pigeons are being selected out at the end of the season, also for the youngsters. The necessary results have to be there or they are out without hesitation. Only when a youngsters comes out of a good breeding couple where other good racers came out of the former years, it has a second chance to proof itself as a yearling.
3. Breeding schedule:
In a matter of food the racing pigeons get “Beyers/Elite” mixture, the breeders and home staying partners “Paloma mengeling”. At the beginning they get the Vandenabeele mixture, then building up food and the last few feedings it is 'Energy' to fill up their fuel. After their last feeding they also get shelled peanuts, candy and hempseed.

Monday: Elite + P40 , garlic oil + probac 1000
Tuesday: Elite + P40 , garlic oil+ probac 1000
Wednesday: Energy Elite + wheat germ oil + probac EnergyCMK
Thursday: Energy Elite + wheat germ oil + probac Energy. CMK
Friday: pigeons in the basket
Saturday: Vandenabeele mixture moisturized with Sedochol and dried with brewers' yeast. Belgasol in the water.

4.medically:
The racing pigeons are only being vaccinated with the obliged vaccines. The young pigeons are being vaccinated against Paramyxo/Herpes and against small pocks with a brush. In October they do get a cure against parataphoid . If there are problems Andre visits a vet.
Once a month the pigeons get a cure for 2 to 3 days with BS.
When the results are less the pigeons will get “Orni-special” from De Weert to ameliorate the results. .

8. End:
They still shoot a lot of pigeons in France. André saw several pigeons getting home with shot wounds. He hopes that there will be controls on this in the future.
André still has the motivation of a 20-year old, which shows in his results. This works also very inspiring for other fanciers. In the future he will also be racing on the long distance races. I don't doubt for a split second that also this will be a huge success !
