Danny de Voogd crowns himself 1st National Champion Vitesse 2024!

 After a foray into long-distance racing, Danny de Voogd has been making an impressive comeback in recent years in long-distance and middle-distance racing. In 2024 he achieved phenomenal results, with no less than 4x first and 4x second provincial wins. His exceptional performance earned him the title National Breeding Champion Vitesse Aangewezen 2024. Moreover, he managed to achieve a feat of stature with his first two provincial ace pigeons, which became 4th and 17th national ace pigeons respectively. What makes these successes even more impressive is that all these results were achieved with over-warped pigeons.

A new start on a familiar foundation
To focus even more on pigeon racing, Danny has decided to sell his beloved restaurant. This gave him the peace and space to realize his ambitions. He moved just a few minutes from his old address and completely transferred his pigeon loft to his new yard. Getting the pigeons acclimated was initially difficult. The first attempt to acclimatize them to small youngsters failed. The old pigeons were left inside a wheeled emergency loft at the old address only to be reinstalled at their new address.  Two weeks later on size youngsters, most of the pigeons managed to find their way home, although it was not without struggle. One of his better pigeons nevertheless perished. Despite this setback, the performance of his pigeons exceeded all expectations. From the very first flight they flew home spectacularly, and it even seemed that the loft in its new location functioned even better than before.

A smart system within a busy life
In addition to pigeon racing, Danny has a busy workday. He starts early in the morning with the care and training of his pigeons, after which he works from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. This forces him to use an efficient system. At the end of December he pairs all pigeons. The eggs from the breeders are put under the racers, but from the best racers he always breeds two youngsters to quickly test their breeding potential. After the breeding period, the racers are darkened from early March to mid-April, sometimes a little longer for the hens.
The pigeons train once a day and Danny has no time to give extra motivation by showing them on basketing day due to his work. Therefore, he trains them weekly, usually on Wednesday, but depending on the weather sometimes on Tuesday or Thursday. The distances go up to 30-50 kilometers, where the pigeons are separated again immediately after release to keep the motivation high.

A coop with smart modifications
Danny designed his coop to require minimal maintenance and provide an optimal climate. The floor is covered with bean straw, which provides a dry and hygienic environment. Under the straw is underfloor heating, which is used especially in the spring to prevent moisture problems. He also uses infrared heating, which is set at 15 degrees during the flying season and later lowered to 12.5 degrees depending on the outside temperature. Large windows in the front provide a constant supply of fresh air, and the ceiling is completely open, with no sliders. This keeps oxygen circulation optimal and keeps humidity around 60% , a crucial aspect for top performance.

Nutrition and care: simplicity is the key to success

Danny swears by a simple but effective feeding strategy. He gets up early to care for and possibly train his pigeons. So everything had to be done before 10 a.m. He feeds his pigeons in the afternoon or early evening and uses mainly Beyers mixtures such as Recup, Galaxy Light and Galaxy Energy. The Recup-mix is used after the breeding period to bring the pigeons back to weight. The youngsters also receive this Recup mixture. This makes them train very hard. Once the season has started they get almost no more Recup.During the racing season, they receive a combination of Galaxy Light and Energy upon arrival home, supplemented with candy seed, peanuts and Willem de Bruijn's morning mix.
On basketing days, food plays an important role: the pigeons get Boardingmix from Matador for extra energy. For the sprint flights he feeds mainly Galaxy Light and in the afternoon Boardingmix. With 2 nights in the basket, the pigeons usually get Galaxy Light from Wednesday morning. Thursday morning they get Galaxy Light again and in the afternoon they get Boardingmix of Matador. For the longer flights, the pigeons get extra fatty seeds and peanuts. Danny has eliminated many by-products over the years and only relies on a few proven supplements, such as LTW by Beute (on Monday and Tuesday) and Pigeon Balance by Beute for extra condition.

Health and medical supervision
Danny favors a minimal medical approach and works with Belgica de Weerd in Breda. Before the season his pigeons get a tricho-cure and a treatment for the respiratory tract. During the season they get a yellow pill every 4-6 weeks. Young pigeons are vaccinated against paramyxo/rota and later against paramyxo/herpes. He also treats his pigeons against smallpox and performs a preventive paratyphoid cure every year, alternating the products used to avoid resistance.

Young pigeons: a strict selection and preparation
The young pigeon loft measures 3.5 x 2.5 meters and is filled until late March or early April. As soon as the youngsters migrate well, Danny starts training them, unloading them mainly towards the west to avoid obstacles such as high-tension cables. Later, they are taken toward Philippine to get them used to crossing water. Some groups fly over well immediately, while others take hours , an important learning moment.
Because his work makes playing on the door impossible, Danny plays his youngsters on nest. Once the restaurant is sold , Danny will use the system “ playing on the door”. For now, he is very satisfied with the nesting system. From experience he knows that pigeons on eggs perform best. New love , a considerable time incubating or over incubating are the preferred nesting positions for Danny. Once the season has started, the youngsters are no longer rapped, except sometimes on Wednesday together with the old pigeons.

Stock development
Over the years Danny has bought many pigeons from different lofts, but he had never experienced a success like the pigeons from Stefaan Lambrechts. These pigeons gave his colony an enormous boost. Both in pure form and crossed with his pigeons from Paul d'Hondt and Willem de Bruijn they performed exceptionally well. Also the acquisitions of Antoon v/d Burg provided several excellent breeders. In addition, Danny knew with Stef Bals, with Stef, an excellent flyer to obtain.

What Danny accomplished in 2024 is nothing short of spectacular. Despite the transition and challenges of a new address, he managed to produce top results from the beginning of the season. With his unique approach and a strong, well-built system, he has surprised friend and foe.A special thanks goes out to Martin v/d Jagt, who helps weekly with collecting and basketing the pigeons.
