Everyone agrees...“The Flup” of Herbots Gebroeders belongs to the select group of best Belgian pigeons ever!

If anyone has had a lot of good pigeons pass through his hands, it is Jo Herbots (Halle-Booienhoven). National winners, Olympiad pigeons, national ace pigeons...almost all of them have already been admired by our interlocutor. But despite all that “unique violence” there is for Jo, and also for many other fanciers worldwide, one pigeon that stands out head and shoulders above all other pigeons and that is “De Flup”.
You can feel that there is emotion in the air at Herbots' house when we want to talk about “De Flup” (B21-2130124). “De Flup” is probably one of the best pigeons that ever cleaved the Belgian airspace. “Never experienced before!” Jo begins his story “Such performance in 1 month (month of July 2023), we have never seen this with anyone before. And the fact that we then bred and played this pigeon ourselves completes the story for us.”
We can only agree and there are no superlatives enough to do full justice to this historic achievement. Pay special attention to the mileage of each flight.

For Miet, Jo, Raf and the rest of the Herbots family there is an extra emotional value attached to the performance of “De Flup”. This champion is named after our late dad Filip who passed away from us on November 30, 2022.
Finetunen
As in previous seasons, the old/yearling flight team consisted of more hens than cocks. In 2024, the ratio was 70 hens and 50 cocks. The system followed can be described as “total widowhood” but heavily seasoned with a lot of “chaos.”
“We have been using this system for several years now with great satisfaction” says Jo ”of course we sometimes think of changing this or that but we don't want to completely change a system that has proven its soundness from one year to the next. Let us say that we are always open to “fine tune” our system. Changing something in the hope that it makes our pigeons a few percent better.
Do you want a concrete example? Well, it concerns our young pigeon system. In total, we breed about 250 youngsters for our own use. These are played according to the sliding door system. Our new approach came in the training of the youngsters. Not the way, but the “direction of training”. The young pigeons are very important in Belgium and all foreign fanciers envy our national races. Those who analyze the results of these races know that the wind determines the place of residence of the winner but also know that most of the participating fanciers live in the center of Belgium.
We have to situate Halle-Booienhoven, with respect to all Flemish provinces, on the shortest distance in the northeast and we noticed on several occasions that those youngsters were tempted to follow the racing line from central Belgium for too long. That's why this year, we didn't start training the youngsters from the south but a good 15 km more west (so more central). Teaching them to leave the “central path” in time and to sprint towards Halle-Booienhoven. Conclusion...we have the impression that it helps and in the meantime we know that other fanciers from our region follow this method.”
The strength of a breeding loft is so important
The search for the very best what the international pigeon sport has to offer is and remains one of the primordial activities of the Herbots family. If they know somewhere a topper is sitting, it tickles to transfer it to their breeding loft because the strength of your breeding loft translates into performance on the racing loft.

In the 2021 season, the Herbots family won the national race from Chateauroux. Their “Bachelor” was not only the fastest against 18,741 youngsters but also showed his tail to all 21,070 Chateauroux racers.
A breeding box was once again shined up and “Bachelor” was promoted to breeder.

Finally
You can feel by everything that family Herbots has the pigeon game on the right track. Miet, Jo, Maarten, Raf and Geoffrey chalk the lines in which football is played and they too readily admit that sometimes mistakes are made, but from mistakes there is a lot of learning and that is perhaps the most important thing of all.
