Murphy’s Law: the exceptional foundation sire of Willem De Bruijn

When Willem De Bruijn talks about his best-ever breeding pigeon, one name inevitably comes up: Murphy’s Law. In one of his columns, Willem De Bruijn described the unique qualities of this cock bird as follows:

“Some cocks only produce good offspring when paired with one or two hens. Others, however, can produce high-quality progeny with almost any hen—these are the ‘white ravens’ (extreme rarities) of the pigeon sport. In my own 40-year career in pigeon racing, I have encountered only one such cock—one that, across the first and second generations, consistently produced top-tier offspring with nearly every hen he was paired with.

We call such a bird ‘prepotent,’ and breeders of all kinds of animals are constantly on the lookout for sires with this ability to pass on their traits.”

With these words, he describes a characteristic that is exceptionally rare and highly valued in pigeon breeding: prepotency.

A prepotent pigeon possesses a robust genetic foundation and carries a high number of favorable, homozygous traits. This enables the bird to transmit its own qualities and characteristic features to its descendants with remarkable consistency.

These are precisely the types of breeders that every serious fancier seeks: pigeons that not only possess quality themselves but are also capable of passing that quality on through successive generations.
