Jos Adami from Meerhout wins 1st National Ace Pigeon sprint yearlings KBDB 2023

05 Apr 2024

The sprinters or the fast men in pigeon racing, still the favorite flights for many. This also applies to Jos Adami from Meerhout in Antwerp, Jos is 69 and in the ensemble “De Oostgrens” one of the better enthusiasts who have to work in this ensemble. He only started with the pigeons in 1993 and went to Cois Janssens in Grootvorst (now Laakdal), he brought 10 young pigeons with him and this was an immediate success. Afterwards he bought a few pigeons here and there from strong fanciers, but never the big crowd. These are not big names, because Jos attaches no importance to them. He went to Jef Claeskens, Ronny Peeters, Willy Seyen, Fons Laermans and Jos Machiels. The latest acquisitions come from Hugo Sools. Now Jos has mainly developed a strain that revolves around “Super 401” and “507”. The “Super 401” is now the grandfather of “114/16” which became 2nd National Ace Pigeon speed KBDB 2017 and “774” 1st National Ace Pigeon speed yearlings KBDB 2023.

So we take note of the following: 6 years ago Jos settled for silver for a national ace pigeon and now he is going for gold. But Jos will no longer shout or walk next to his shoes. For him, this remains a pure hobby and a helping hand in his pigeon loft is no problem. We all want each other to win, even though you naturally want to win every week, but if you are realistic you know that is not possible. The speed flights have always been the favorite competitions here, in the past he has raced some pigeons in the middle distance, but he has no patience for this so this was phased out.

Now we are visiting him because of a national ace pigeon from last season, his yearling “774” was the 1st National Ace Pigeon speed yearlings KBDB 2023.

System

The preference here is for pure widowhood, cocks divided into 2 lofts. The team usually consists of about 30 people. After 4 to 5 flights the first selection is made, a pigeon that has not yet shown will be stopped but will remain in the loft. The widowers are coupled with the breeders during the winter period, and all widowers have their own youngsters selected to know immediately whether they are breeding or not. These will be your future breeders, so it's better to give them a chance immediately.

After the breeding period, the training sessions will be resumed and in March the pace will increase to twice a day. We have to be there in April with many pigeons on our flights.

Otherwise you cannot have a chance of great results against many pigeons. The pigeons stay outside for one hour each time, but fly for 20 minutes and then usually go up and down, it is fantastic to see when widowers are in good shape how they transform the airspace into a spectacle. They never come out on Fridays and Sundays.

What do you do in terms of motivation?

The widowers have an entire living box available with an inverted saucer. When basketing for the 1st flight they do not get a hen, but from the 2nd flight onwards they do, but it then sits half box next to them for a few minutes and then the cocks are taken away. When they come home, they may initially stay together for 1 to 2 hours.

Afterwards this is usually a little longer, I go to the room for the bells at 1 p.m. and when I return they usually separate. I cannot say whether the national ace pigeon was more motivated than the other, I saw nothing special about it other than the fact that it was a good one. As a young pigeon he had not flown specifically, but in general my young hens are always better than my young cocks.

The pigeons have a pond in front of the loft, which also has a bath next to it. If the pigeons feel like it, they can take a bath here, but they usually only do this in rainy weather.

Young pigeons

The young pigeons will be darkened in one loft for the first time this season to give it a try. The others will simply be played as in previous years. Otherwise I will no longer have any pigeons that are in the mood to participate by mid-August. Last season I tried to have some couples that nest in August and then are coupled at the end of July. The cocks that are still there and have shown themselves are stopped with a view to their career as yearlings. The sexes are separated after having flown 1 or 2 Momignies, usually at the end of May.

Afterwards it opens on the day of basketing around 1 p.m. and I start taking them away around 3 - 3:30 p.m. Compared to the old pigeons, the young pigeons only train once a day and always in the morning. They only come out in the afternoon if the weather is bad in the morning.

Care

The widowers are given 2 mixtures, Sport and Superdieet from Van Tilburg. When you return home, this is 100% Super Diet, afterwards 50% Super Diet and 50% Sports until Wednesday evening. Then I switch to 100% Sport. The widowers are not fed separately, but simply in one communal feeding bowl. The young pigeons receive Beyers Galaxy Sport together with Sport and Superdieet from Van Tilburg. At the start of the season they are given a pill against coccidiosis and tricho from DAC. For the respiratory tract I use Respiratory once or twice per season. If I see that the first flights are good, I will stay away from it and only use it during half the season.

Otherwise it will be April and July. As a disinfection for tricho throughout the season, I use B.S. from Belgica De Weerd, DKS or Ronidazole 10% once a month. During the week, Jos mainly gives tea on Wednesdays and Thursdays, to which he adds Royal Jelly from Beyers. Other products are Bio Florum, Reload and Recovery from Beyers that are used during the week. Last autumn, all pigeons received their first treatment and vaccination against paratyphus.

The young pigeons were also vaccinated twice this year against Paramyxo and Rota and are also brushed against smallpox. The widowers only receive their mandatory vaccination against paramyxo in the spring.
