Kris and Lieselotte De Bisschop win 1st I.Prov. Orléans 5,365 young pigeons

Last weekend, we had an interprovincial race from Orléans, with an impressive 5,365 young pigeons at the start. The winner is "Magic Senna," a superstar young bird who achieved a lead of 37 m/min in this race. He had already demonstrated his talent in Noyon, and now he's doing so again in this tough race from Orléans. This is the second interprovincial victory of the season for Kris and Lieselotte De Bisschop, after also winning Chateaudun against 1,562 yearlings. Both victories were achieved in the Denderbond Ninove local venue where the games are usually played.

Young Pigeons

The young pigeons here, just like everywhere else, are darkened and given supplemental lighting. We do stop the darkening earlier, though, and will call it a day at the end of May/beginning of June. A month later, we then start supplemental lighting until the end of the season. This year, we started later due to a lack of time due to our busy jobs, which we combine with the pigeons. Therefore, the young pigeons haven't flown much yet, and Orleans was only their first middle-distance race of the season. They flew Noyon four times before, and because we started later, we also mixed up our different rounds. The pigeons aren't separated and won't be again, as they still have three weeks to fly, and then it's over.

The winner from Orléans is a young cock that had been paired, and his hen had laid eggs 14 days ago. So he was now brooding, which might not be good for a cock, but that's just how it is.

Because the pigeons are now together and spend part of the morning on their nests, we let them train twice a day so they can all stretch their wings daily. Usually, on Wednesdays, we also take them for a 30 to 40 km ride, and then they're ready for the next race.

The pigeons all receive Aidi mixtures year-round. We stick to Vliegmix 1-2-3 and use it according to our own schedule, which we've developed over the years. We also use supplements during the week, all of which are also Aidi products.

Our regular veterinarian is Frederik Oosterlinck, and we will intervene based on his advice. We don't like to treat too much. We use the yellow drops weekly and as little as possible otherwise. Regarding vaccinations, we've taken a slightly different approach this year. We visited a forum run by Raf and Kobe Herbots and followed their advice regarding vaccinations. The young pigeons are therefore given Paramyxo Rota, pox, and paratyphoid twice a week. This year we also had our pox injected for the first time and did not use the brush, and we have not experienced any problems.
