The "All-round pigeons" of Broeckx Niels (Oud-Turnhout) continue to give it their all.

24 Oct 2025

"Rich as a trophy"... that's how we'd describe the 2025 season for Niels, Marleen, and Jan Broeckx. Let's be honest... if you can clock 25 national top-100 finishes, you can't complain. At Tulle, they finished second nationally, just behind a pigeon from their good friends Bart and Nance Van Oeckel. It wasn't the first time this had happened, but that didn't stop the celebrations.

But let's take a look back at the 2025 season:

TOP 100 NATIONAL 2025

24-5 Bourges   531km : 27-70-85 nat. against 17,189 yearling
08-6 Argenton   581km:  60  nat. against 11,557 old
27-6 Agen  879km:
12 nat. against 4,839 old
84  nat. against 5,314yearling

05-7 Bourges  531km
44-58  nat. against 8,132 old
54  nat. against 11,056 yearling

22-7   Argenton   581km  73 nat. against  4,758 old
26-7   Argenton   581km
20-42-51-81 nat. against 4,077 old
39 nat. 5,812 yearling

28-7   Narbonne 913km   27 nat. 4,021 old
03-8   Tulle  685km  2-8-12 nat. 3,726 old
03-8   Bourges   513km
6  nat. 5,261 old
46   nat. 7,666 youngbirds
Bourges   513km :22   nat. against 18,985 youngbirds
Argenton  581km   14-61-69  nat. against  11,600 youngbirds

This makes the 2025 season very similar to the 2024 season, as 5 top-10 and 25 top-100 finishes were achieved then as well.

21-9  Quievrain 136km  182 OUDE 1 (van 2 ingekorfde)
27-9  Ronde van België  102km OUDE 1 (van 1 ingekorfde)

The definition of "all-round pigeon" truly applies here, because winning top prizes from 136km (Quievrain) to long-distance races (750km) is simply ingrained in the Broeckx pigeons' DNA. You couldn't make them more "all-round."

A bit of history

Niels Broeckx is the son of Jan and Marleen Broeckx. The family moved from Baarle-Hertog to Oud-Turnhout in 2007. In Baarle-Hertog (Baarle-Nassau), they already raced under the name 'Jan Broeckx'. Jan, in turn, is the son of 'Broeckx-Van Hees' from Oud-Turnhout, also formidable long-distance racers. Pigeon racing is a family affair, as the women of the house, Maria Van Hees (Jan's mother) and Marleen Govaerts (Jan's wife), are also involved in pigeon racing on a daily basis and have become indispensable in the care of their feathered friends.

Jan Broeckx has been racing pigeons for over 25 years, spending a good decade in Oud-Turnhout. He combines pigeon racing with his work in his bakery in Baarle-Hertog. In 2012, the bakery was sold, and from then on, both Jan and his wife Marleen, who took over the bakery, could fully focus on pigeon racing. This strict plan immediately resulted in good results for the young pigeons from 2012 onward. In 2013, these pigeons confirmed their success by winning a considerable number of prizes as yearlings. The trend was set, and year after year, the Broeckx pigeons' results crescendoed.

Briefly about the racing system

The old and yearling pigeons are all raced with a partner that stays at home. The old hens are raced up to and including Limoges/Souillac (750km). The yearlings complete the national 500km program.
The hens are darkened from 7:00 PM to 8:00 AM until mid-May. After that, they are lightened until the end of the season, which is from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
Regarding daily training, the cocks train first in the morning and then the hens. In the evening, it's the other way around. Training is only mandatory at the beginning of the season, so they get into the rhythm faster.
On the day of basketing, the partner is never shown. After the race, they are allowed to admire each other for an hour in a half-open box, after which they come together and can spend a good hour cuddling. About three hours after returning home, the pigeons that flew are fed in the hallway in front of the loft. Once everyone has a full crop, they can return to their partners. They are usually then allowed to spend the night together.
A total of 350 youngsters were bred for our own use. These are seriously put to the test in their year of birth and must complete at least one national race. However, most youngsters have three nationals under their belts. Jan: "Of these 350 youngsters bred, 70 survived the selection and will be raced as yearlings next year."

The young pigeons are vaccinated four times. First against Rota/Paramyxovirus, then against Herpes, then again against Paramyxovirus, and as a fourth vaccination against Parathyphoid (live vaccine). Jan: "By vaccinating youngsters properly, you reduce health problems later on. Last year, we didn't give the young pigeons antibiotics a single day. Only the familiar yellow drops were mixed into their feed weekly. Believe it or not, we didn't experience the dreaded "one-eye cold" either. Is this also a result of the vaccinations?"
The young pigeons can enjoy a stay in the aviary during the day. When they are darkened they of course stay in their loft.
Jan: "From 14 days before the young pigeons' first national race, the sexes are separated, and the youngsters are raced using the sliding door system. From then on, we also schedule additional training flights. They are released three times a week, either 60km or 90km. When we do this, we also include all the racing pigeons, including all the old and yearling pigeons. They are then released in different groups, and if their condition is good, there's hardly any difference in flying time between the different groups."
The racing pigeons are fed mixtures from the Beyers range. The Vandenabeele (low-protein) mixture serves as the base, and as basketing day approaches, this is gradually replaced with Galaxy Energy. As supplements, we rely on products from the Herbots Animal and Herbovet ranges, such as Brewer's Yeast (BMT), 4 Oils, Proteins (Pro-Recup), and so on.
For medical care, we have complete confidence in veterinarian Raf Herbots. His vaccination and treatment schedule is followed very strictly. We visit his waiting room twice a year, and for the rest of the time, we communicate frequently by phone. The familiar yellow drops are added to the feed weekly, on Mondays and Tuesdays, to combat trichomonas. A "4-in-1" pill is also administered every four to five weeks.
After the season, all pigeons receive two weeks of Dokamox, then one week of Herbochol, and are then vaccinated against paratyphoid (a dead vaccine).
