Vanhoudt Benny (Diest) currently has the best yearling in the country on the heavy middle distance with “New Kim 3”

12 Jul 2025

Several national races have already been flown in the extreme middle distance, and for now, the best yearling, "New Kim 3," is housed with Benny & Bart Vanhoudt in Diest, Flemish Brabant. This hen has amassed an impressive palmares, including four national top 30 finishes. Other strong pigeons will have to emerge to beat this one, but in pigeon racing, we know that anything is possible as long as the competition isn't over. This coveted title is usually contested until the final race from Bourges, which is in early August.

But "New Kim 3" has been in superb condition since the beginning of this season, just like all the other pigeons in this colony. Benny has one season under his belt so far and is still in contention for national ace pigeon titles with other pigeons. "New Kim 3" has now retired from racing and has sought other safe havens.

How are the hens doing?

During the winter, these pigeons were allowed to raise a nest against the breeders, and two pairs of eggs were collected from some of them. The first was immediately moved, and they then raised the second nest themselves. I then darkened them in the spring to keep them as calm as possible.

The hens are kept in a small roosting loft with small bowls and elastic bands on the floor. Two large balls are placed on top of them in case any pigeons land on the elastic bands, causing the balls to roll and the pigeons to fly back up. The pigeons are fed in the small corridor next to the roosting loft, and the hens go into the aviary at the front of the loft during the day. This aviary is small, with a 20cm opening at the front, and everything else is closed. They spend the entire day there, lying quietly next to each other. The pigeons are occasionally fed peanuts along the wire, and they are very familiar with this. It was abundantly clear that the hens were eager to mate with each other all year round. Perhaps it was a mutual motivation, but it certainly worked here.

Furthermore, the hens are allowed to train twice a day to keep them moving, as long flights are out of the question here; if they're in the air for two 10-minute bursts, I'm happy. In the spring, they usually train for half an hour, and that's enough for me.

In principle, the pigeons are basketed every weekend, and only flew after Bourges, with four nights in the basket, followed by a short flight the following weekend from Soissons. The week before the last national race from Bourges, they flew the provincial Vierzon, achieving a very good result, except for "New Kim 3." She missed a good hour, which wasn't her usual habit, but luckily she came home and went straight to Bourges, where she was once again victorious and, so far, the best yearling in the extreme middle distance in our country.

The hens are basketed without seeing a cock; they are taken directly from the resting loft and, upon returning, are given their cock. This is a different cock than the one in the breeding loft, and they were allowed a few hours with it initially. After two nights in the basket, I always left them together until the next morning.

Regarding feeding, I use the entire Aidi schedule with Vliegmix 1, 2, and 3, along with their supplements. I also visit Karlo Van Rompaey for checkups, and if necessary, I give them something. However, I rarely have to do anything for trichomonas and coccidiosis, as I rarely suffer from them.
