Bosmans – Leekens (Beverlo) win 1st Nat (z) Sancoins 1,377 old pigeons

13 Jul 2026

On the national race from Sancoins, it was the turn of top hen “Sky” to further enhance her palmares. This hen is housed in the lofts of Marc Bosmans and Dirk Leekens in Beverlo, Limburg. She not only wins provincially but also wins gold in the zone; she is a true all-round hen descended from 4 proven grandparents, each of whom was a top performer in Beverlo.

The hens are raced using the classic widowhood system with partners staying at home. It is primarily Marc and Dirk's intention to focus on introducing the partners well during the winter period; they are brought together weekly in the late afternoon (half-baked) and separated again the following morning. They do this weekly until they know each other well, at which point they are allowed to be paired. Consequently, the hens do not breed during the winter period. In the spring, they are let out and allowed to train once a day. Training in the spring was as normal, but now with the succession of flights, this does drop off a bit. They stick to their rhythm of once a day.

At the moment of basketing, they come together briefly again; either we lock up the cocks and let the hens parade in front of them, or we let them into the hallway for a moment and they go along like that. Alternatively, we do let them be together briefly during basketing; we alternate a bit to avoid setting the routine. We do have a fixed rule, however, that when the pigeons return from the national races, we do not push them to go to the cocks. We will reward them briefly, but we prefer to allow them recovery rather than a crazy cock waiting in his box. That is why we only give the partners as a reward the morning after; once they know this, it works just as well, and they are allowed to stay together for a few hours. Then the latecomers also benefit from it, and all the pigeons can be together right away and at least be recovered so they can enjoy it.
