Coel Matthias (Boortmeerbeek) 1st Provincial Argenton 884 young pigeons

13 Sep 2024

In the penultimate national race of the season, victory in the province of Flemish Brabant went to Matthias Coel. His young hen was the fastest of 884 young pigeons and good for a 13th place nationally of 9,401 young pigeons. This was again a granddaughter of stock hen “Ona” who became 8th National Ace Pigeon longer middle distance KBDB and on which the colony of Matthias Coel and Frederik Motton continue to build together. The friendship and strategy between these 2 lofts has been a permanent connection for years and crossing “Ona” with other top fanciers from the region to breed together takes this colony to an even higher level.

As was previously the case at his old location in Rotselaar and now in 2024, Matthias only plays with young pigeons. Family and hobbies are all important, which makes combining everything very difficult. That is why we went back to the old system of the past, a young pigeon team and basketing at the furthest possible distance from the nationals. The pigeons flew 3 national flights in a row, then flew Orléans and flew Argenton last week. So now they are at Chateauroux.

Young pigeons

The group was darkened until July 1, after which I waited until 14 days before Bourges to start explaining that I will now continue to Chateauroux. Then the belt comes off.

The young pigeons train once a day, initially after weaning he asks volunteers to leave his pigeons outside around 2 pm so that he can call the pigeons in when he returns home from school. They then have the whole afternoon to explore the area. Afterwards we slow down the pace a bit and they have to start listening. Sometimes they come out in the morning when I'm home or in the afternoon, but they have to listen. During the big holidays it is of course much easier for me to take care of the pigeons in the morning and then be able to do other things afterwards.

Training starts here as early as possible and this year I was ready to hand them over on May 1, but bad weather threw a spanner in the works for a few weeks, causing me to keep postponing the start and the 1st flight did not go well. It's a shame of course if you spent so much time on this, but that's the way it is now.

The pigeons are raced on the sliding door, but because I had very few cocks, I leave them together during basketing, but after one hour I then take away the hens that have already been paired. This way the remaining hens still have something to motivate them from the cocks.

When they return home, they can do whatever they want, but if they fight against each other, then so be it. The pigeons stay together until the evening in the beginning and then I extend this until Sunday afternoon.

In the past, the pigeons were driven much more during the week than now. On Wednesdays I try to drive up to 15 km and they come together briefly. I don't drive too far because I don't want them to encounter accidents due to high voltage or other things. I didn't ride last week at the basketing in Argenton, so I don't know whether it makes any difference because there is no straight line to follow.

In terms of nutrition, I work with 2 mixtures, Beyers Galaxy Light and Galaxy Energy. In the medical field, I will mainly use Schroeder - Tollisan products including Immunol when I get home and a lot of Tollisol Plus. Furthermore, BCK is added to the food the day after returning home and I give some Comed products almost every day. These are Rhoni, Lysocur and Stopmite.
