Coppens Freddy - Segers Petra shine with 3rd National Valence II against 2,344 old birds

26 Jun 2025

On the national race from Valence II against 2,344 old birds, Freddy Coppens and Petra Segers from Okegem achieved an impressive 3rd national place with their top hen BE23-4040097 “Wonder Ace Girl”.

This performance was no surprise: her track record clearly shows she’s an exceptional hen. As a young bird, she was already ace pigeon in the heavy middle distance in the club with 7 prizes. As a yearling she confirmed with 6 out of 6 on long distance races and became ace pigeon long distance in the club. This year she started well with prizes on Orléans and Vierzon. Limoges didn’t go well, but she bounced back with a 5th local place in Valence I against 106 birds. Since that race was released on a Monday and turned out to be tough, they chose not to basket her for Cahors.
Instead, she flew a 160 km race from Noyon the Sunday after, and was then entered for Valence II – with the well-known result: 3rd National.

The Coppens loft races on total widowhood, starting the season with 10 pairs (9 yearlings and 11 old birds). They always keep one partner home to have a motivator present upon return. Everything happens with basic care – since Freddy became secretary of the Koninklijke Denderbond Ninove in 2010, the loft is not the first priority. Despite that, top results keep coming, also in One Loft Races where their pigeons frequently score.

Top pedigree as a foundation

Genetically, “Wonder Ace Girl” comes from gold. Her mother “Wonder Ace” was a top performer and 2-time ace pigeon heavy middle distance in the club, but was lost last year. Her grandparents – a grandson of Gladiator (Geerinckx) and a granddaughter of Wondere Dirk (Koopman) – are still part of the breeding loft. The father is a grandson of De Vincent (Mylle Roger) x Laat Jong Witneus, which traces back to Freddy’s original line, this original line was sold completely publicly through Herbots in 2010, but the quality clearly lives on in the current generation.

This 3rd national prize proves once more: quality always finds its way to the top, even with modest time and means.
