Cor Walda (Zwolle-NL): 2024 what a super year !

Cor Walda from Zwolle is a name familiar to many pigeon fanciers. Cor 69 years, happily married to his wife Jolanda, he has dedicated his entire life to pigeon racing in addition to his work as a letter carrier. And with success: in the past six decades Cor has won just about everything there is to win , except the overnight races, because he does not participate in those.

“I play everything from 100 to 725 kilometers with a team of old pigeons,” says Cor. Usually about 25 couples that he plays on total widowhood. The youngsters have their own loft and are played from there. Despite his modest attitude, it is clear that this is an absolute top fancier.

Strongest lofts of 2024

One of the strongest lofts of the Netherlands in 2024, we can count Cor Walda without any doubt. Week after week he achieved great results and/or series and under his pans are currently some real top birds. His achievements are the result of sharp selection and iron discipline.

The breeding strategy

Besides his racing team, Cor has 11 couples of carefully selected breeders at his disposal. His breeding strategy is aimed at crossing his best former racers with purchased pigeons, often coming from lines of 1st prize winners in big leagues or TT pigeons. Within his breeding program he applies a strict selection policy: only pigeons with several top-flyers in the pedigree are considered. Through targeted crossings and well-considered inbreeding Cor knows to keep the quality in his colony at a high level.

International experience

In the period from 2011 to March 2016, Cor worked as a loft caretaker in England. A valuable time, but since his return to Zwolle - nine years ago now - he has been fully active again on home soil and with great success.

Medically strict and simple

Cor also leaves nothing to chance in the medical field. “The old pigeons are vaccinated against paratyphoid in November and in December follows the paramyxo vaccination, on eggs I give a yellow cure of seven days. At the end of March they are inoculated against paratyphoid again. Furthermore, I drip the yellow drop in the nose every Tuesday, that should be enough.”

An equally clear and disciplined schedule applies to the youngsters: twice a vaccination against paramyxo-rota, a smallpox vaccination, a yellow drip and also a vaccination against paratyphoid. “They also get the yellow drop, but over the feed,” he said.
