David Vermassen (Gavere) win 1st Provincial Orléans 19,050 old and yearling pigeons

12 May 2026

No fewer than 19,050 old and yearling pigeons entered the provincial race from Orléans in the province of East Flanders. A magnificent number, and with the headwind on top of that, we witnessed a fair race where the best pigeons came to the fore. The winner is a hen housed at the loft of David Vermassen in Gavere, which is run by his mother Nadine and Dennis Annaert. This is no stranger to success for the winner; she also won a 1st prize at Noyon earlier this year against 1,585 pigeons. Top class in general with this result and, as the icing on the cake, such a super pigeon.

System

The hens are raced on classic widowhood with partners staying at home. These are only paired in the spring for 5 days to get to know each other, and for the rest of the time they are simply kept loose without a cock. The hens train once a day, usually around midday at 1:00 PM. At that time, there are the fewest groups out in the region, which ensures they train well; we usually keep them in the air for a mandatory 1-hour period. This is the only time they are allowed out of their nesting boxes; for the rest of the day, all pigeons are locked in their boxes with separate food and drink. This is quite a lot of work, but this way we keep the group under control, and we consider this the best method in our system. The hens were not darkened before the season, and the goal is primarily national races of demanding middle distance and long distance.

Before basketing, the cock is always shown for 30 minutes, and after the race, they stay together for 2 hours. During the preparation, they flew Noyon twice, then their first middle distance race in early May, and now Orléans. In terms of nutrition, from Sunday to Tuesday evening they receive 50% Vandenabeele Beyers and 50% Sport Light Beyers. On Wednesday, we then switch to 100% Sport, which they also receive on the day of basketing and upon their return. Furthermore, we like to use Wonderpigeon products, find Wonder Air very good after a cold flight, and also use Wonder Turbo regularly. Additionally, Health Elixir is certainly something that helps to get the pigeons back in good shape. For trichomoniasis, we always use the yellow drops on Sunday after the flight, and for coccidiosis or anything like that, we do nothing. We went for a check-up in mid-March and the pigeons were in excellent condition, so apart from the above-mentioned, they have received nothing so far.
