From building a breeding stock to national ace pigeons: the success story of the Homma brothers (Steggerda, Netherlands)

Ydo and Elco Homma, better known as the Homma Brothers, can look back with pride on what they have achieved in recent seasons. The absolute star of the 2025 season is undoubtedly ‘Olympic Marion’. This exceptional hen achieved an impressive list of results and ended the year with the following rankings in various national competitions:

Throughout her career, ‘Olympic Marion’ achieved no fewer than five top ten rankings in the province. In addition, she finished in the top twenty provincial rankings a total of eight times. ‘Marion’ is a direct hen from Marco Zandvoort and confirms the quality of his loft in Friesland as well.

In addition, “Mara” became 3rd Nat. Ace Pigeon sprint 2025 and 7th Nat. Ace Pigeon PIPA Rankings, and the Homma brothers ranked 3rd Best Sprint loft in the Netherlands.

'Mara' comes from a pairing with big names. Her father is ‘Golden Haas’, a son of ‘Haasje’ from Marco Zandvoort, a fixture in the breeding loft. Her mother is a daughter of ‘Rogerke Bolt’, owned by Hans & Evert-Jan Eijerkamp, who himself won no fewer than 7 first prizes, paired with ‘Gerda’, granddaughter of the famous ‘Euro’ and already a 12th Nat. Ace Pigeon in the middle distance as a youngster. A direct son of “Mara” can be found in this internet auction under Buy 10: NL 25-1567230.

Ydo and Elco Homma took their first steps in pigeon racing in 2006 under the name Gebr. Homma – Steggerda. From 2008 onwards, the bar was raised and the focus shifted emphatically to strengthening the pigeon stock. That same year, they visited Arie Dijkstra, which resulted in the arrival of a brother and a son of the famous super pigeon Okidoki to Steggerda. One of these cocks would later become an absolute progenitor of the loft: ‘Maldini’. Through work and the development of a close friendship, young birds from the absolute top pigeons of Hans & Evert-Jan Eijerkamp came to Steggerda. The blood of Leo Heremans in particular is strongly represented within the successful Eijerkamp colony and therefore also at Gebr. Homma. Since 2008, pigeons have been moved from Brummen to Steggerda every year. In 2018, the cock ‘Dakar’ was purchased, which later developed into the most important breeding cock of the Homma brothers. In combination with a direct hen from the van den Brande brothers from Berlaar, a daughter of ‘Ace Noyon’, he forms the current stock pair. Success was not long in coming: one of the first offspring immediately became 1st Olympiad pigeon in the Yearlings category 2023 in Bucharest, better known as ‘Olympic Luna’. Direct children from this stock pair have already won four first prizes provincial, while a grandchild has also won a first prize provincial.

For the one-day long distance, the line of stock cock ‘Maldini’ was mainly crossed with pigeons from C. & G. Koopman. One of the most valuable breeding cocks from this contribution is ‘Hardrock-Z’, which, in combination with several daughters of ‘Maldini’, produced particularly strong offspring. To strengthen the one-day long distance stock, pigeons were purchased from C. & G. Koopman again in several consecutive years, resulting in regular reinforcements from Ermerveen to Steggerda. An absolute star in the breeding program is ‘Daughter Jazmin’. She is, among other things, the mother of ‘Evi’, good for three top-10 rankings in the province, and also of the 24-891, winner of a 1st prize in the province against 14,010 pigeons.

After the theft in 2021, the team picked up where they left off in 2022 with a whole new batch of young birds. That same year, they also got a full round of youngsters from Rien & Irving van Oss. Several top-class pigeons came from that group too, including ‘Fien’, who won 1st prize in the Grand Prix race from Châlons-en-Champagne. In addition to the bloodlines already mentioned, the loft was further strengthened with several quality injections via good friends Marco Zandvoort and Arnold Paalman (now Eijerkamp-Paalman). Marco Zandvoort brought the exceptional cock ‘Golden Haas’ to Steggerda, among others. Arnold Paalman also made an important contribution with several outstanding racers. These included ‘Nienke’, who won the title of 3rd National Ace Pigeon De Allerbeste in 2021, as well as two absolute top hens from recent seasons: ‘Antoinette’ (3rd National Ace Pigeon Sprint NPO 2023) and ‘Juna’ (1st National Ace Pigeon Sprint PIPA Rankings 2024). Juna underlined her class by winning no fewer than six first prizes, five of which were in large competitions.

From 2026 onwards, the Homma brothers will be operating from their new location. They will no longer be participating in races from their former address. The performance pigeons on offer are still young and, under normal circumstances, would have continued to race from the old loft.
