Jan De Bisschop (Asse) wins 1st Provincial Limoges 954 old pigeons
09 Jun 2026
For the first long-distance race of the season, we always head to Limoges, a tradition that has endured for years. The winner for the province of Flemish Brabant can be found at the lofts of Jan De Bisschop in Asse. Jan has only a small team of old pigeons, but they perform very well. First and foremost, Jan wants to thank his father Gustaaf and sister Lieve, along with his helpers Jean Pierre and Ronny, because he ended up in the hospital last season and consequently had to rely on the help of others.
**System**
Here, both cocks and hens are raced using the total widowhood system. Before the season, they were paired, and Jan let them do their thing for 3 weeks. One pair brooded for 8 days, the other for only a few days. But after those 3 weeks, everything was cleared out, and that is how the season started. There are 4 old pigeons, and these are primarily used for the long-distance races; that is also the goal for the yearlings, though they will mainly fly the long-distance races in the month of July. They are trained twice a day; at the beginning of the year, this was mandatory with the flag, but not anymore. As a result, they develop better basic fitness and maintain a better appetite. During basketing, I normally leave them together for 15 to 20 minutes, and it is chaos in the loft. However, with the Limoges basketing, there were only a few pigeons I had to separate, and I simply took them to the rest loft and that was that. Upon their return, they always stay together until the morning of the next day. For Limoges, I put the cocks from the hens that were entered into a separate loft and then left them together there. Sometimes you have to improvise a bit when races are postponed. But as long as they are rewarded and know why they have to fly home, it is fine.
In terms of nutrition, I use Aidi Vliegmix 1, 2, and 3. The supplements also come mainly from Aidi, and as an extra, I do give conditioning powder from Norbert Peeters.
