Jespers – Vanderwegen from Holsbeek wins 1st Brabant Union Vierzon 829 yearlings

Last year on the same flight from Vierzon, the tandem Jespers – Vanderwegen from Holsbeek won 1st Br.Unie Vierzon against 2,868 old birds and “Ramona” was the fastest of 4,976 pigeons in total. Subsequently, this top hen completed a wonderful palmares in 2022 in the national races. Now one year later it is the turn of a new top hen who wins 1st Brabant Union Vierzon against 829 yearling pigeons. The week before they also won 2nd and 4th Brabant Union from Blois, so the engine has started at the Jespers – Vanderwegen home.

Total widowhood

For the 2023 season, the racing team consists of cocks and hens that are raced on total widowhood. The cocks mainly race the provincial races between the national races, the hens the national races and they also raced Blois and Vierzon in preparation. After Bourges they raced Soissons in preparation for Argenton.

The racing team was coupled for 3 weeks in February, but few eggs were laid. The couples were well paired, but laying was not an issue. Afterwards, the daily training sessions were started and they went smoothly, even now they easily train for an hour a day.

So far nothing special has been done in terms of motivation when basketing, the pigeons are picked up and that's it. When they return home they can certainly stay together for a few hours and after Bourges this was until the morning after. If the flights are easier, this time span will be less longer. Or maybe when the swing has worn off a bit, we will drive extra on Wednesday and then leave them together for 2 hours and basket them like that.

In terms of nutrition, the Beyers mixtures are used. They are fed up with Sport Galaxy and 
Sport Energy towards basketing. Oil is used over the feed together with Guy Mertens condition powder. Before the racing season they were treated against tricho and we also regularly check to rule out anything. But otherwise we work weekly with the yellow drops in the beak at basketing.
