Lismont Patrick (Bekkevoort) Golden As Middle Distance Herbots Championship

24 Apr 2026

As is customary every year, the colony of Patrick Lismont and his wife Sonja is found among the national champions. Their preference is for cocks in the sprint races and hens in the middle distance. As a result, they have already managed to secure multiple championships, and last season they also won the “Golden Ace Middle Distance” in the Herbots Championship with their super hen “Charlotte”. She flew no less than 8 times in the top 100 in the middle distance and 3 times in the top 100 in the sprint races, which did not count towards our championship. Sadly, this hen is no longer with us; on the second race of the 2026 season, she was the only pigeon from the entire loft to go missing. A hard blow for this racing team, as everyone knows that such top performers are few and far between. Furthermore, we are pleased to introduce this colony and their system to you, along with other top performers from this colony, where you should take a close look at the pedigrees, particularly at top hen “Nina”. This hen was 2nd National Ace Pigeon Speed KBDB Young Birds in 2019 and was not sold; she is now performing fantastically in the breeding loft, with several super pigeons, especially in the second generations, passing on her genes in the racing loft.

Racing pigeon system

The system has been established here for several years. The widowers are geared towards sprints, and the hens fly middle distance. Both groups have separate partners that stay at home, so everything here is raced on the classic widowhood system. Both the widowers and the hens participate in winter breeding so that they are well-attached to their lofts. Once the young pigeons are grown, training begins, and they flew very well, just as they do every year. I have no problem with letting my pigeons train at home, and certainly not with the hens, who know this rhythm all too well.

There is no longer a second pairing leading up to the season. The pigeons are driven a few times, and then they are ready. I usually start with the whole group at the same time, and once they have been out, I rarely stay home. Breaking the rhythm is something I absolutely do not like.

The hens have certainly been your showpiece in recent years.

Yes, I have that system completely under control and feel very good about it. During the day, the hens are kept in two small aviaries where they have nothing but grids underneath them. These are only open at the front; otherwise, they are closed. Once they have finished training, they are allowed to eat inside and then move to the indoor resting loft. In the summer, when it stays light for a long time, I let them stay in the aviary even later because they mate more easily then than in April with the colder temperatures. In my system, this isn't really a resting loft, as I simply hang small dormer windows in front of their nesting boxes, and wooden grids are provided on the floor.

The hens are kept in darkness from the end of February until the end of April. This season, I might even extend this by another two weeks, as it really doesn't hinder me in terms of racing.

They do not get to see their partners on the sprint races in April before basketing; I only do this starting from the middle distance, where they are allowed to stay together for 15 to 20 minutes, while the others stay a bit longer. Upon returning home, I leave the partners with them until the evening, never until the morning of the next day. As soon as the hens have settled down, they start eating, and that is necessary if they have to be back at the starting line at full speed on Thursday for the next race.

They train once daily, and as mentioned earlier, this really is an hour of full throttle. They fly middle distance weekly from the beginning of May until the end of July, and then they take the reins off.

How do you motivate your cocks?

The cocks are always shown their hens before the race; the first one is seen for 2 to 3 minutes, while the longest one can sit with them for a good half hour. The widow hens of the widowers go into small boxes halfway through the week. This makes them truly eager to mate and passionate about their partner, and I believe this helps with motivation. Therefore, a lesbian hen will never be able to be paired with a cock here. After the race, they always stay together for 2 to 3 hours, and then everything is separated again.

Young Pigeons

The young pigeons are divided between the 1st and 2nd rounds, and they are all kept in darkness from the end of February until the beginning of June. After 3 weeks, I start providing artificial light until the end of the season. I place the youngsters on the sliding door once they have flown Momignies (115 km) twice.

The young pigeons are driven for the first race but not afterwards. The focus here is also on speed, as they are only raced sporadically. The cocks, in particular, do not fly further than speed. In my system, it is not necessary for me to take risks regarding their future in that regard.

What feed and supplements do you use?

At the beginning of the week, I feed my pigeons Super Recup Hi-Tech from Anthoons along with Beyers Galaxy Light. On Wednesday, I add Top Energy from Vanrobaeys to this, and I increase the dosage to a maximum of 50% before basketing, sometimes adding a bit more Tovo at that point.

For the widowers, I am currently working with the F1 and F3 mixtures from Vanrobaeys. F1 is for the beginning of the week, and I use F3 at the end of the week. I feed the cocks in the morning on the ground in a tray and in the evening in their feeding trough. They do get treats after their training when being called in.

Upon arrival home, everything here gets 100% Sport Maxi Top from Anthoons so they recover well.

As additional support, I follow the Beute schedule completely, and regarding medical matters, I always go for a check-up with Stijn Rans. The racing pigeons here usually receive a course of treatment for trichomoniasis before the season, and halfway through the season I repeat this with 2 or 3 days of B.S. from Belgica – De Weerd. I do nothing more for the respiratory tract of the old pigeons; only the young pigeons are treated before their first flights, and that is it. I also do not use yellow drops during the season; the pigeons almost never have trichomoniasis, and I have absolutely no trouble with coccidiosis.

Patrick and Sonja, heartfelt congratulations on these top results from the entire HERBOTS TEAM.
