Rino Verheye (Aalbeke) wins 1st Provincial Tulle 1,456 yearlings

26 Jun 2026

In the first long-distance race for yearlings, 1,456 yearlings entered the race in West Flanders. The winner can be found at the lofts of Rino Verheye in Aalbeke. His yearling cock takes 8th place nationally against 6,780 pigeons. He follows in the footsteps of his father, who became 20th National Ace Pigeon in the long distance last year, and whose father's best result was also at Tulle. Like father, like son; simply fantastic… Nothing but proven top pigeons in this pedigree, with provincial or national ace pigeons as both grandfathers.

Rino races exclusively with cocks as old birds and yearlings, a system that has served him well for years. The cocks are paired together with the breeders in early December and raise one round of youngsters. When the youngsters are 21-22 days old, one youngster is removed along with the hen, and one remains with the cocks. After that, there is no second pairing. The widowers were darkened from early March to late April in preparation for the national races, which is his goal. The pigeons normally train twice a day; only when it is very hot or raining do the pigeons train only in the morning. They also train twice a day on the day of basketing, which offers nothing but benefits in terms of food. At basketing, Rino only shows the dish, and that is it. After returning home, they are usually allowed to stay together for 3 to 4 hours once they return from the long distance races; for sprint races, this is very short (15 to 20 minutes). The latecomers from Tulle who arrived the day after were not shown a hen, but will now be given one due to the race-free weekend.

As preparation, the yearlings flew Clermont twice (middle distance) and then Orléans. The following week they participated in Bourges and flew Argenton 14 days later. Then they were given a week of rest, and so they went to Tulle. In terms of nutrition, Rino now uses the Revolution blends from Vanrobaeys. Ultra Light is often mixed with Marathon No. 61. For the last 5 feedings, it is 100% Marathon No. 61.

As supplements, something from the Röhnfried range is usually given; upon arrival, this consists of electrolytes, and from the middle distance onwards, it is Avipharm and Mumm combined. In warm weather, Rotosal is added to this. During the week, I make extensive use of Naturaline, and on Wednesdays, they receive Gerwit – W. All racing pigeons receive a yellow drop weekly, on Sunday or Monday at the latest. For medical care, Rino and Miranda always visit Pascal Lannoo every 14 days during the season.
