Röntgen Eduard & Dennis: Top in Germany on the international races

Perhaps for many of us the name Röntgen sounds unfamiliar to our ears but for those who follow German pigeon racing more closely, they know better. Since 2013, this father-son combination has been among the best in their country. Especially on the international and national marathon flights, they can already put the following references on the table :

The foundation 

Röntgen und Sohn SG is formed by father Eduard and son Dennis. Until 2010, Dennis and Eduard only competed in all-round races but now they only play the Marathon races, partly stimulated by their friendship with family Freialdenhofen. 

In 2011, their other friend Karl-Heinz Kanski lent them 13 breeding pairs, allowing them to breed their first Marathon pigeons already that year. Pigeons that could fly races of 800 to 1100 kilometres. That same year, the first 6 Freialdenhofen pigeons joined the Röntgen breeding team. The first breeding year was immediately exceptional. They bred three toppers. 

The first of these, 1990-11-42 ZIZOU, was bred from two Kanski pigeons. In 2013 he was crowned ‘Goldene Barcelona’ and in 2018 he gave birth to the 2013 1st National Narbonne. His blood can be found in many of today's Röntgen pigeons. 

The second crack is PLAYBOY 51, 1990-11-51, who won 10 international prizes during his sporting career including 3 x TOP 50 National Pau. He too has become an excellent breeder and his own brother is the sire of the 3rd National Ace Pigeon of 2023 and grandfather of the 1st National Perpignan. 

The third exceptional pigeon of 2011 was QUEEN OF GERMANY 1990-11-112. In 2014, she had an exceptional year, including a 4th National Marseille and 1st National Ace hen at international competitions. Crossed with Zizou, she gave birth to two super breeders. One of them is the mother of the 8th Nat Pau 2023, which itself is the brother of another ace pigeon of the colony with 3 prizes in 3 flights in 2023. Wulfram Kipp once said ‘if you can ring 2-3 very good pigeons in one year, you have had a very good year’. So I hide behind Wulfram's wise words and say Dennis and Eduard could not have made a better start.

To complete the solid base formed by the pigeons Kanski and Freialdenhofen, Dennis and Eduard knocked on the door of Friedhelm Menne, the fancier with two international wins at Barcelona and Perpignan. Eduard knew that Friedhelm had a great breeding hen called SIRAFA. He contacted Friedhelm to order a youngster, to which Friedhelm replied that he had so much demand that this hen would have to lay 60 eggs a year. So initially they had nothing until Friedhelm contacted them later and said ‘I have something for you, a young cock from the “ Bruno x Sirafa ” pair’. For your information, Sirafa and Bruno were acebirds National 3-year ranking Barcelona respectively. Out of this pair, Röntgen got with the ‘ 188 ’, a superior breeder! Paired with a Freialdenhofen hen, he produced the ‘ 292 ’: 4th National Barcelona 2022, 5th National Barcelona 2023, 10th National Perpignan 2022, 29th National Perpignan 2023 and 34th National Marseille 2021. 

Another son of ‘ 188 ’, bred from the mother of the 1st National Agen 2020 (Freialdenhofen), won 4th National Barcelona 2023. 

The Röntgen's last ‘ Jackpot introduction ’ was with Marc Schreurs. They regularly buy pigeons from the best there. Dennis and Eduard's 1st Primus Interpares 2020-2024 is a 50% Schreurs pigeon. 

At Schreurs, Marc did not just take any pigeon but direct children of these provincial winners of Barcelona and his Primus Inter Pares, convinced that the good ones come from the good ones.

In terms of type, Dennis and Edouard prefer medium-sized pigeons with good harmony. A good pigeon should feel like a ‘ plank ’ in the hand. I have yet to see the pigeon that can be used for long distances and that does not have a good back. When breeding, we attach great importance to the eyes, looking for a small pupil, a visible, complete and closed correlation circle and good iris pigmentation.

Each new pigeon has three years to prove himself. If he produces nothing useful during this period with different partners, he will be eliminated.

Care taking. 

Again, I leave the floor to Dennis: ‘A few years ago, the Freialdenhofen family had some of the most popular brands of feed examined. It turned out that Beyers' feed was the best. Then the Freialdenhofens had both a fly mixture and a high-fat mixture prepared. Since about five years, we have been feeding our pigeons with this feed. We start training in mid-March and use Champion Light Galaxy. With this feed, the pigeons go up to 200 km. Then we gradually switch to the flight feed and from 350 km the pigeons get the last two meals, a mixture rich in fat. In preparation for a long-distance classic, the pigeons are given the rich mixture for the last four meals. The pigeons are fed individually.

In terms of supplements, we use Röhnfried products. We have chosen a few products and remain loyal to them, namely Hexenbier, Rotosal, Ro-Ready, Immunbooster, Carni-Speed and Avidress. 

Norbert Peeters is in charge of the colony's medical care. We visit Norbert 4 weeks before Pau and he considers whether we need to intervene or not. 

In December, we treat all pigeons with Parastop and vaccinate them with an inactivated vaccine.

Conclusion

Combination Röntgen... we see them as Freialdenhofen 2.0. By ‘getting along’ with them, they have become a copy. They feed their pigeons in the same way, they play in the same way, they select in the same way. But that is just the beginning. Everything they do is thought through, nothing is left to chance. The bar is very high and, above all, there is a lot of ambition.
