Roger & Koen Vanmeert from Zelem discover a new super couple

In the Limburg village Zelem Roger & Koen Vanmeert have been racing really well since many years. Especially on the races from 100-500km they are at their best and are always looking for pigeons who can handle this. They strive for all round pigeons who can race to the top of the race on the short distance races, middle distance races and national races. Now the season of 2021 have started a few weeks ago we wanted to see what they managed to put on paper until now.
On the 3rd of April they won the 1st Region Momignies against 1,438 old pigeons, 2 weeks later they won the 1st of the Region Vervins against 1,901 old birds and the week after that the 1st and 2nd of the Region on Soissons against 3,109 old and year birds. On the 2nd of May the 1st middle distance race was on the agenda and won the 2nd of the region out of Sourdun against 1,111 old birds. And the past weekend it was the 2nd Provincial Gien against 8,042 old and yearling birds and 2,3,4,5 against 582 yearling birds on Mettet.
So you can find them on a weekly base on the short distance races or middle distance races at the head of the race. Simply super class.
Preparation
The racing team exists out of a loft of 12 widow cocks for the short distance races and 24 for the middle distance and national races. These can easily go true the moulting period and are being coupled in December to breed. When the latest couple is breeding for 10 days everything is being cleaned out and can train outside again and no second coupling will follow until the start of the season.
This year they started to train them in March and the widow cocks get to see their hen for a very short period of time at arrival to get to know the system very well.
In Spring they train once a day but from the moment that the 1st race has passed they have to train twice a day during a full hour.
How do you handle the basketing ?
We have a fixed rule, we always show their hens during 15 to 30 minutes each week again. They are being locked up separately per couple and can do whatever they want.
At arrival they also come together, now during the first races this is very short (1 to 1,5h), but last week after the late arrival from Gien and the bad weather the middle distance team could stay together until the next morning.
Guidance
We follow the schedule of Matador and use as supplements the Backs Products, Entrobac from Rohnfried and Conditional powder and Recup-Fly from Karlo Van Rompaey.
In a medical way all our pigeons get their food separate and drink which makes contamination of trichomoniases possible but giving it on to other pigeons is being kept to a minimum then. That’s why we make on a regular base use of B.S. from Belgica De Weerd to disinfect the pigeons after arrival.

When we have a look at this family of top pigeons it just can’t be otherwise than they come out of super pigeons. At the Vanmeert’s it all starts from base breeder “Witbaard”. He took care of a fantastic breeding line since 2004-2005 who is fantastic now 16 years later. The grandfather to this pigeon won the 1st Provincial Gien and is a son to this famous “Witbaard”. He was coupled against a hen from Sabrina Brugmans for a co-breeding and out of these they bred their Bourges winner who won the 1st Provincial Bourges and the 4th National. On mothers’ side it is 100% Frans & Gert Rondags blood.
